First song I wrote in January of 2018, and first song I've ever written primarily on guitar. Goes without saying that this was the first song written for From Over the Gates, and the one the entire album concept sprang out of.
A human hero -- maybe even one from your world -- versus a monster. But he doesn't have to be the good guy if you don't want him to be.

This is a tale of a slayer of monsters
Bane of our kind, but hero to another
Came of a race with no fur on their face
And always wrapped with cloth or in metal
Came to a place that was worlds away
With bloodthirst drained, body still in fine fettle
What he'd seen had turned him bitter
What he had done would make your tail quiver
Whatever he saw he had conquered
But on this plane one stood up to him at last
...
Beneath the trees the hero fought
In furied resignation
Beneath the trees they fought
In the shadow of the water's basin

The challenger had eyes of bronze
And coat as dark as midnight
Though his wings stretched barely wide
As his foe's height, when he took flight
And that foe had cased himself in iron
Yet this challenger was certain that he could win the fight
That he could halt the menace this night

It was a brutal battle, the hero's shell impenetrable
But then the challenger gained the air
Brought down the dam upon the grove
Took a breath, and down he dove

Only one emerged from the water
Our brave challenger ended this man's slaughter
...

His foe showed no hesitation

So now, we rule the night once more
And we are feared, abhorred
